Development of Cushioning Material Coated with Nano-TiO2 for Extending Postharvest Life of Banana

The objective of this research was to develop a foam cushioning material coated with nano-TiO 2 from photocatalytic reaction for extending banana
postharvest life. Nano-TiO 2 solution was prepared using 95% ethanol as the solvent at concentrations of 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2% w/v, and was subsequently sprayed as a coating material onto the foam cushioning surface. Once coated, it was tested to extend banana’s storage life. The studied samples were stored at room temperature under the 18 watts fluorescent lamp which was located 30 cm away from the sample for 10 days. The results showed that the samples covered with foam cushioning material coated with 2% w/v nano-TiO 2 had the highest efficiency. It helped reduce the respiration rate of the bananas. Furthermore, the fruit’s storage life was extended from 5 to 10 days, doubling from banana covered with uncoated foam cushioning material. Therefore, farmers could apply nano-TiO 2 coating method in order to aid efficient transportation or storage for banana postharvest management.
